Some general advice about getting a job in Conference Planning
If you don't already have specific conference experience (and working in a conference hotel or venue doesn't really count), the route into this industry is either through on the job experience with an agency who is prepared to take on enthusiastic people and give them the training they need, or through an events course run by Universities such as Leeds Metropolitan. These courses normally include a 40 week placement in an events company, and individual colleges can give you more information on what they offer. If you choose to try to find a position and learn on the job, you will need a lot of patience and energy as there are a large number of people trying to get into the industry and you will need to apply to a lot of agencies before you find an opening. You will also need to be prepared to make the tea and do the running around for a year while you learn the ropes.
A qualification will help to some extent, but the events industry is all about experience rather than theory. However a good standard of education is essential to do the job. We normally recruit staff who have experience in events or associated roles (television, theatre etc.) but we occasionally take on someone who shows real aptitude and promise and give them the training they need.
